Why you should be resting more?
Exercise is super important but more often than not people go full tilt into it without realising that actually it is when our body is recovering and resting that we are able to develop and grow. Resistance training causes the muscle to breakdown (little micro tears in the muscles), it is during rest, cells called fibroblasts repair it. This helps the tissue heal and grow, resulting in stronger muscles. Despite what others may say, a rest day isn’t about being lazy on the couch. It’s during this time that the beneficial effects of exercise take place. The only caveat to this is that we don’t want the rest days to roll in to rest weeks and rest months…. We need a good balance between the stimulus from resistance exercise and the recovery in between. Just like anything balance is key.
Rest is necessary for avoiding exercise-induced fatigue, preventing injuries and repetitive strain. Also if you are doing too much, your performance is likely to decline which will also increase your risk of injury. Taking time to get proper sleep/rest and the right nutrition are key to maximising your results from the gym and improving your health and body composition in the long run.
