How much do your hormones actually affect your mood?
Hormones can directly impact your mood. There are a few hormones that are labelled the happy hormones, from serotonin, dopamine, oxytocin and endorphins. These hormones can directly impact how we feel. Think of that feel good feeling when you have done some exercise, that is caused by the release of endorphins. Or that feeling you get when you have a warm embrace with a loved one (release of oxytocin). Deficiency in these hormones can cause low mood.
Equally fluctuations of our sex hormones during our cycle can negatively impact our mood and is what contributes to mood swings during the PMS stage of our cycle. Mood swings and other symptoms associated with PMS are very common. According to one estimate, at least 90% of those who have a menstrual cycle experience physical or psychological symptoms of PMS.
